CONVITE-CALENDA ES LA TRADICIÓN EN LA CIUDAD DE OAXACA, QUE AL INICIAR LA NOVENA DE UNA FIESTA PATRONAL, HACEN SU RECORRIDO POR LAS CALLES INVITANDO A LA NOVENA Y A LA FIESTA: LOS MONOS DE CALENDA, LA BANDA DE MÚSICA Y LOS FELIGRESES CON FAROLES. EN VÍSPERAS DE LA FIESTA SALE LA CALENDA: COMPUESTA POR LA BANDA DE MÚSICA, LAS CHINAS OAXAQUEÑAS LUCIENDO SUS MEJORES GALAS BAILAN POR LAS CALLES CON SUS CANASTAS ENFLORADAS, FAROLES, MARMOTAS Y CARRO ALEGÓRICO CON MOTIVO RELIGIOSO.


Convite-calenda is the tradition in the city of Oaxaca that marks the traditional ninth day before a Saints Day fiesta. The participants do a parade through the city, inviting everyone to the fiesta: the puppets, the band members, and the parishioners carrying lanterns. On the evening before the fiesta there is a parade of the calenda – band members and Oaxacan dancers wearing their finest costumes dancing in the streets with their baskets of flowers and lanterns next to floats with religious themes.


2. Centeotl Grupo de Danza y Baile de Santa Cruz, Sones y Jarabes de Betaza

La sierra, cuna del benemérito de las américas, constituida por los distritos de Villa Alta, Ixtlán y Mixe; localizados en la Sierra Madre Occidental y Oriental, con elevaciones que sobrepasan los 3000 metros de altura, como el Cempoaltepetl, La Malinche, y El Monte Blanco. La música y la danza caracterizadas por la ingenuidad espiritualidad indígena, en la que brota la poesía natural, sentida y honda del alma ancestral, reflejada en la rítmica sencillez de los jarabes y sones; nostálgicos algunos, alegres otros, entregándose las parejas con todo el sentimiento humano que inspiran las altitudes de nuestra sierra oaxaqueña.

This dance is from Villa Alta and Mixe Ixtlan, located in the Sierra Madre mountains with elevations exceeding 3,000 meters. Peaks include Cempoaltepetl, La Malinche, and El Monte Blanco. The music and dance is characterized by indigenous spirituality, which flows with the natural, heartfelt, and deep ancestral soul of poetry reflected in the simplicity of rhythmic sounds of our Oaxacan Sierra altitudes - some nostalgic, others joyful.

LOS SONES MAZATECOS SE COMPONEN CON RITMOS MUY MÍSTICOS Y LENTOS, CON CANTOS A LA NATURALEZA. LO MAZATECOS REFLEJAN UN PROFUNDO RESPETO A LA TIERRA, A LOS ANIMALES Y A LA NATURALEZA Y LO REFLEJAN EN EL BORDADO DE SUS HUIPILES, ADORNADOS CON LISTONES DE COLOR AZUL Y SOLFERINO, ENREDOS BLANCOS BORDADOS EN LA ORILLA CON MOTIVOS DE ANIMALES Y PERSONAS.

The folk dances Mazatecos are composed using mystical and slow rhythms from nature. The Mazatecos show a profound respect for the earth, animals, and nature, and this is reflected in the embroidery of their outfit decorated with blue and yellow ribbons embroidered along the edges with motifs of animals and people.

LAS MUJERES CON SUS BELLOS Y EXQUISITOS TRAJES CON ADORNOS MULTICOLORES, DE SEDA, CONSTITUYEN UN VERDADERO ATRACTIVO EN UNA GUELAGUETZA. LA ÉTNIA DEL ISTMO ES SIN DUDA UNA DE LAS MÁS ALEGRES Y ORGULLOSAS DEL ESTADO DE OAXACA, ADEMÁS DE LO BELLO DE SU ATUENDO, ESTAS BELLAS DAMAS CARGAN UN XICAPEZTLE, QUE ES UNA ESPECIE DE JÍCARA QUE SE ADQUIERE DE LA CÁSCARA GRUESA DE LOS CALABAZOS Y SON DECORADAS CON BELLAS FLORES MULTICOLORES.

The women with their beautiful, exquisite costumes adorned with multicolored silk embroidery are a true attraction at a Guelaguetza. The cultural heritage in the isthmus is without a doubt one of the most joyful and proud in the state of Oaxaca. Besides the beauty of their attire, these beautiful women carry a xicapeztle, which is a species of jicama gourd that forms a thick skin and is painted with beautiful multicolored flowers.

EN LA POBLACION DE SAN ANTONINO CASTILLO VELASCO, HORTICULTORES POR EXCELENCIA Y RESPETUOSOS POR SUS TRADICIONES, BAILAN EL JARABE DEL VALLE, EN LAS MAYORDOMIAS O FANDANGOS, ES LA CULMINACIÓN ALEGRE QUE SE DESBORDA AL INTERPRETAR SUS DIFERENTES SONES, EN UN FANDANGO SE BAILA EL GUAJOLOTE, Y DURA BAILÁNDOSE Y REPITIÉNDOSE PARA QUE PASEN LOS FAMILIARES DE LOS NOVIOS. LA MUJER USA LA MANTA QUE ENROLLA EN SU CINTURA TEÑIDA EN GRANA DE COCHINILLA Y BLUSAS BORDADAS EN PUNTO HAZME SI PUEDES.

The people of San Antonino Castillo Velasco, excellent farmers and respected for their traditions, dance the Jarabe del Valle in town celebrations and festivals. In one fandango they dance El Guajolote and they keep dancing and repeating the stops as family members pass by their sweethearts. The women wears a shawl that is rolled around her waist, Teñida En Grana De Cochinilla, and embroidered blouses.

Ejutla de Crespo es una ciudad y un municipio del mismo nombre, en los valles centrales del estado de Oaxaca. Es parte del Distrito de Ejutla, en el sur de la Región Valles Centrales. "Ejutla" es de la exotl náhuatl y tla, que significa "lugar de abundantes granos verdes"; "Crespo" es para el Padre. Manuel Sabino Crespo, que luchó junto a Morelos en la Guerra de la Independencia y fue ejecutado el 19 de octubre 1815 y en cuya memoria el Congreso del Estado decretó un cambio en el nombre de Villa de Ejutla de Heroica Ciudad de Ejutla de Crespo el 11 de diciembre de 1885.

This dance is from Ejutla de Crespo, located in the central valleys in the Ejutla District. Ejutla is from the Nahuatl exotl and tla, meaning "place of abundant green beans". "Crespo" is for Fr. Manuel Sabino Crespo, who fought alongside Morelos in the War of Independence and was executed on October 19, 1815 and in whose memory the State Congress decreed a change in the name from Villa de Ejutla to Heroica Ciudad de Ejutla de Crespo on December 11, 1885.

HUAJUAPAN DE LEÓN: JARABE MIXTECO. EL JARABE MIXTECO CONSTA DE SIETE SONES Y DANZAS REGIONALES: JARABE INICIAL, ZAPATEADOS, CHANDEE, PALOMO MIXTECO, GUAJACADO, TORO Y JARABE FINAL; ALGUNOS DE ESTOS SONES DATAN DEL TIEMPO DEL VIRREINATO. LA RECOPILACIÓN DE LA MÚSICA LA REALIZO EL PROFESOR ANTONIO MARTÍNEZ CORRO Y LA RECOPILACIÓN DE PASOS EL SEÑOR CIPRIANO VILLA HERNÁNDEZ.

Huajuapan de León: The Mixtecan folk dance consists of seven regional folk dances: Jarabe Inicial, Zapateados, Chandee, Palomo Mixteco, Guajacado, Toro Y Jarabe Final. Some of the dances date back to the time of Del Virreinato. The traditional music was collected by Professor Antonio Martînez Corro and the dance steps were collected by Mr. Cipriano Villa Hernåndez.


8. Villa Hidalgo, Yalalag

Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, significa oficialmente “cerro desparramado.” y se ubica en el distrito de Villa Alta del estado de Oaxaca. Las mujeres Yalaltecas se reconocen fácilmente como tales al llevar la indumentaria tradicional que se compone de un huipil blanco y una falda de enredo. El huipil está adornado por delante y por atrás con borlas de colores. El huipil que se usa para las bodas y otras fiestas especiales está bordado con un diseño floral. En tales ocasiones las mujeres suelen llevar además como tocado un rodete de tela de lana de color negro. También incluye un collar con un pendiente en forma de la cruz triple, a veces conocida como la “cruz de Yalálag.”

Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, officially means "scattered hill" and is located in the district of Villa Alta of Oaxaca.
The Yalalteca Women are easily recognizable as such to wear traditional clothing consists of a white Huipil and a skirt. The blouse is adorned front and back with colored tassels. The huipil is embroidered with a floral design which is commonly used in weddings and special celebrations. On such occasions, women often wear on their head a Rodete made out of black wool. It also includes a necklace with a pendant in the shape of the cross, also known as the "Cross of Yalálag."

DESDE PUTLA DE GUERRERO, DONDE LA ALBORADA DESPIERTA LAS NUBES Y EL ESPÍRITU SE ELEVA EN UN CANTO A LA VIDA, PRESENTAMOS NUESTROS SONES Y CHILENAS DONDE SE MEZCLA EL MISTICISMO MIXTECO Y LA ALEGRÍA COSTEÑA. LOS HABITANTES DE NU-CAA, TIERRA DE HUMO, QUE ESTÁN PRESENTES EN ESTE MAJESTUOSO LUGAR

From Putla de Guerrero, where the song of daybreak awakens the clouds and the spirit rises with a song celebrating life, we present our dances combining the mysticism of the Mixtecans with the joy of the coastal people. The inhabitants of Nu-caa, land of smoke, are present in this majestic place.


10. Ballet Folklorico Nueva Antequera de la ciudad de Los Angeles. El Torito Serrano.

EN LA FIESTA PATRONAL DE SAN PABLO MACUILTIANGUIS, ENTRE SUS SONES Y JARABES QUE SE PROLONGAN POR HORAS, ES COSTUMBRE QUE SALGAN A BAILAR EL SON DEL TORITO SERRANO, SON CANTADO EN DONDE CUENTA LA DESTREZA Y HABILIDAD DE LA MUJER PARA TIRAR A SU PAREJA, USANDO ÚNICAMENTE LA CABEZA.

It is a custom to dance for hours the Son del Torito Serrano during the feast day of San Pablo Macuiltianguis’ patron saint. It combines dancing with singing and tests the skill of the woman to knock down her partner using only her head.

La ciudad de Santa Cruz otorga la Proclamación 2016 a la Organización VIVE OAXACA.

QUIERE DECIR EN NÁHUATL “HACIA EL CERRO DESMORONADO” LAS CHILENAS LLEGARON A OAXACA CON LOS MARINOS CHILENOS. AL MEZCLARSE CON LOS SONES COSTEÑOS, EN LOS QUE SOBRESALEN LAS PERCUSIONES TRAÍDAS A ESTA TIERRA POR LOS ESCLAVOS NEGROS, SE GENERARON LAS CHILENAS COSTEÑAS, A LA BATERÍA SE INTRODUCEN LAS TROMPETAS Y EL SAXOFÓN. LA CHILENA “PINOTEPA” DE ÁLVARO CARRILLO, ES LA MÁS CONOCIDA DE TODAS Y SE ACOMPAÑAN DE VERSOS PICARESCOS.

In the Nåhuatl language this means “ towards the tumbledown mountains”. The Chilenas arrived in Oaxaca with sailors. Mixed with the coastal sounds, the percussions brought to this area by black slaves stand out. Together they create Las Chilenas of the Coast, introducing the sounds of the trumpet and saxophone. The Chilena Pinotepa of Alvaro Carrillo is the best known of all and is accompanied by picturesque verses.

ES DE UNA DE LAS MUCHAS DANZAS DE CONQUISTA QUE SE BAILAN EN MEXICO, ESTA COMPUESTA POR MARCHAS, HIMNOS, PASOS DOBLES Y SONES; EN ELLA SE REPRESENTA LA CONQUISTA DE LOS AZTECAS POR PARTE DE LOS ESPAÑOLES. EN LAS GUELAGUETZAS DEL LUNES DEL CERRO SE PRESENTA ÚNICAMENTE EL BANDO DE LOS AZTECAS, ENCABEZADO POR MOCTEZUMA. EL ORIGEN DE LA MÚSICA Y COREOGRAFIA ES PRODUCTO TANTO DE LOS INDÍGENAS OAXAQUEÑOS COMO DE LOS MISIONEROS DOMINICOS ESPAÑOLES.

This is one of the many dances of conquest that are danced in Mexico. It is made up of processions, hymns, double steps, and music. In this dance there is an enactment of the conquest of the Aztecs by the Spaniards. In Guelaguetzas of Lunes del Cerro, only the band of Aztecs is represented, led by Moctezuma. The origin of the music and choreography is as much from indigenous Oaxacans as from Spanish missionaries.

“CERRO DEL CONEJO” ESTA REGIÓN NO CONTABA CON UN BAILE CARACTERÍSTICO PARA ESTE ESPECTÁCULO, EN 1958 EL GOBERNADOR DEL ESTADO ENVIO A TUXTEPEC, LA PARTITURA “FLOR DE PIÑA” PARA QUE SE LE CREARA UNA COREOGRAFIA. LA PROFESORA PAULINA SOLIS OCAMPO, REALIZO UN BAILE ÚNICAMENTE DE MUJERES ATAVIADAS CON HUIPILES DE OJITLAN, JALAPA DE DIAZ, VALLE NACIONAL, IXCATLAN Y USILA, LLEVANDO EN EL HOMBRO UNA PINA DE LOMA BONITA. DE ESA FORMA SE PRESENTO EN ESE AÑO, CONVIRTIÉNDOSE DESDE ENTONCES EN UNO DE LOS FAVORITOS DEL PÚBLICO. REPRESENTA LA ALEGRÍA DE LA MUJER POR LA BUENA COSECHA DE PINA.

The region Cerro del Conejo once did not have a characteristic dance for the Guelaguetza. In 1958 the governor of the state sent to Tuxtepec the musical score Flor de Piña for choreography to be created. Professor Paulina Solis Ocampo created a dance for women only, dressed in outfits from the towns of Ojitlan, Jalapa de Diaz, Valle Nacional, Ixcatlan and Usila. They carry on their shoulders a pineapple from Loma Bonita. The dance became a favorite of the public. It represents the happiness of the women for a good pineapple harvest.
