Centeotl at Berkeley

SANTA CRUZ -- Stepping into the football stadium at Harbor High School on Sunday was like a trip to the southwestern Mexico city of Oaxaca.

The Mexican city, which shares the name of the state it's in, is known for its rich culture and traditions, such as the giant tortilla covered in beans, cheese, shredded cabbage and fried chorizo known as a "clayuda." The city is famous for an annual celebration called the Guelaguetza.

The Guelaguetza, in its sixth year of being replicated at the high school field, includes parades, music, marching bands, dancing in colorful traditional costumes and bountiful food.

Guelaguetza means "mutual help" or "shared offering."

On Sunday, women marched around the high school's dirt track wearing brightly colored skirts and carrying large baskets of flowers on their heads. Men wore traditional white suits and hats as they marched.

On the sidelines, bags of sliced melons with limes were sold.
